BIRDLAND - THE MANHATTAN TRANSFER (1979)

The Manhattan Transfer a enregistré une version vocale de “Birdland” sur des paroles de Jon Hendricks sortie le 31 octobre 1979.

1. Le groupe

The Manhattan Transfer est un groupe vocal de doo-wop, de jazz « léger » et cabaret américain fondé en 1969.

Il est composé de deux chanteuses et deux chanteurs :

• Cheryl Bentyne (Soprano), 
• Janis Siegel (Alto), 
• Trist Ethan Curless (en) (Basse), 
• Alan Paul (en) (Ténor). 

Sauf cas particuliers, les quatre vocalistes sont généralement accompagnés par :

• Yaron Gershovsky (Directeur musical, Claviers et Piano) 
• Steeve Hass (Batterie et Percussions) 
• Adam Hawley (Guitare) 
• Gary Wicks (Guitare basse et Contrebasse) 

Le groupe s'est illustré, notamment, par des reprises chantées du “Birdland” de Weather Report, dont une, au Playboy Jazz Festival in Los Angeles, réunissant les deux groupes.

2. L’album Extension et la reprise de Birdland

Cet album est dédié à Eddie Jefferson (1918-1979), le “plus grand chanteur de jazz du monde”, décédé l’année de la sortie de l’album à l’âge de 61 ans.

La première plage de l'album Extensions est “Birdland”, une musique de Weather Report avec un texte de Jon Hendricks. Ce morceau, qui est devenu l'indicatif musical du groupe est un des enregistrements de jazz les plus populaires des années 1980. “Birdland” a rapporté à The Manhattan Transfer ses premiers Grammy Award :

• Meilleure Exécution de Jazz-Fusion Vocal ou Instrumental 
• Meilleurs arrangements de Jazz Vocal 

Le groupe était alors composé à l’époque de :

• au voix : Janis Siegel (voix d’alto et arrangement vocal), Cheryl Bentyne (voix de soprano), Alan Paul (voix de ténor), Tim Hauser (voix de basse) 
• aux instruments : Michael Boddicker (synthétiseur), Richie Cole (saxophone alto), Michael Omartian (arrangement rythmique et piano), Jeff Porcaro et Ralph Humphrey (batterie).
